Law of Attraction

Why I believe in the law of attraction

Whether the idea of the law of attraction is new to you, or whether you’ve been following it for years, it’s always interesting to hear about how the law of attraction has impacted others’ lives. I wanted to share my story to show you how it has impacted my life and to give some context for why I wanted to start this blog.

I learned about the law of attraction when life wasn’t going great

Like many other people (I’m guessing), I first learned about the law of attraction during a rough patch in my life.

I had just gone to graduate school only to find that I hated the profession that I had trained for (and was subsequently in a lot of debt for). I was working long days, nights and weekends, and the stress of the job was eating at me. I was desperate to leave, but at the same time, I had no idea what I could do instead.

I had also recently broken up with a long-term partner—one whom I had previously thought I would marry. After our last vacation together, he confessed that he had cheated on me. I felt completely blindsided.

So here I was, in a job I hated, having recently broken up with a long-term partner, looking for a new place to live. For the first time in my life, I had no idea what was next for me.

The law of attraction sounded too good to be true, but I had nothing to lose

When I first came across the law of attraction (via the book Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks), I honestly thought it seemed too good to be true. I mean, you just ask for what you want and you can have it? Anything you want? Is this for real?

But at the same time, I was open to trying anything. Things weren’t working out the way I had been doing them (clearly!), and if there was even a small chance that this could work, I was willing to try! At this point, I had nothing to lose.

Affirmations helped me identify what was important to me

According to the law of attraction, I could get a better job by envisioning what that better job felt like and writing about it. So, the first thing I started doing was writing affirmations and scripting. Since I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career, and I had no idea what I might be qualified for, I thought about what I didn’t like in my current job, and what I would want instead.

For example, in my dream job, I enjoyed my work and felt professionally fulfilled. I enjoyed working with my coworkers and appreciated how friendly and easy they were to work with. I had a reasonable schedule that didn’t involve night and weekend work. So that’s exactly what I wrote about!

While I was sitting in my office, wondering what I would do, I would think about how I wanted my job to feel like and wrote exactly that.

I’m so grateful to have a job that I love and where my work is appreciated.

I love working with my coworkers; they are all so friendly and supportive.

It’s so nice to have a job with reasonable hours and where I can leave work “at work” when I go home for the night.

When you’re writing affirmations, it’s important to feel as though what you’re writing is real, and to write in the present tense.

Note that I didn’t bring any of the negative vibes into my vibration, so I didn’t say “I don’t want to work long hours and weekends.” Since the law of attraction doesn’t distinguish what you give your attention to (i.e., what you want vs. what you don’t want), be sure that you’re focusing only on the positive aspects of what you want.

Affirmations helped me take inspired action

So, the biggest misconception about the law of attraction (to me), is that you can just ask for something and get it without doing anything. Now, I’m not saying that you have to keep doing something you hate—in fact, the opposite is true!

The law of attraction rewards inspired action. That is, once you ask and align yourself with the feeling place of what you want, you will be inspired to take certain actions. As you take these actions, the universe will help you reach your goal.

As I was writing these affirmations for my new job, I started taking actions that would bring me closer to my goal of a satisfying career.

Specifically, I:

  • Revised my resume
  • Spoke to friends and my school’s career counselors for advice
  • Searched for jobs online
  • Applied to jobs
  • Went on interviews

After just a few weeks of searching, I learned about an opening for a newly created position that sounded amazing. Even though I had no direct experience for the position, I thought that my life and work experience more than qualified me for the job. In fact, I was convinced that I was the perfect fit!

So I wrote a cover letter, submitted my resume and application, and nailed my interviews. I told all of my friends about the job and why it was the right job for me. I honestly felt that I was absolutely the best candidate for the position, despite having no direct experience.

While at the time I felt a lot of uncertainty, in hindsight, the whole process happened so quickly and easily. In less then three months, I had changed my career completely, and was in a new job where all of the affirmations I wrote about came true!

The law of attraction inspires you to pursue your dreams

You might be reading this and think, ok sure, you got a new job that you liked, but how do you know it was because of the law of attraction? Wouldn’t you have gotten the job anyway, even without writing those affirmations?

To be honest, I don’t think so. Here’s why.

Before I learned about the law of attraction, I was searching for and applying to the same kind of job that I already knew I hated. Why? Because I didn’t think I could do anything else. Here I was going on interviews for jobs I didn’t want. And surprise, surprise, I was not getting any offers. Could it be that the interviewers were picking up what I was putting down? Don’t hire me, don’t hire me, I don’t want this job, please don’t hire me!

The law of attraction encouraged me to identify what was important to me in my career. It inspired me to take action and think bigger about what I could do. And it helped me be confident about the whole process by getting to the “feeling place” of having the job of my dreams.

I can honestly say that I love my job (yes, I’m still there!) and that all of my affirmations about my job have manifested.

My law of attraction success stories

If this didn’t convince you that the law of attraction works, I’ve also used it to manifest:

  • The love of my life
  • Getting engaged
  • Getting our first house
  • Getting pregnant (after some unexpected hurdles)
  • Traveling to specific locations (and traveling in style!)

And probably a bunch of other stuff I can’t remember right now.

But honestly, even if you read this and you’re still feeling skeptical, why not just try it with an open mind? Worst case scenario, you lose a little time. But what if it works?? Wouldn’t you love to live the life of your dreams?

I wrote down that I was going to meet this person I was following on Instagram. I believed it was going to happen and I imagined a million scenarios where we actually met and boom. We did. Twice. I didn’t even know about anything like the law of attraction then. That’s my success story 😉
